Effective healthcare lighting design is crucial for creating a beneficial environment that promotes the wellbeing and recovery of patients. Westmead Hospital’s Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) recognised this importance, partnering with International Lighting to implement a custom lighting design which prioritises safety, visual comfort, and aesthetics for mums and bubs in need.
Completed in February 2023, this custom lighting design was tailored to enhance the inpatient experience for mums going through significant mental health problems in the perinatal period (before, during and after birth). By working closely with the hospital’s stakeholders, we ensured our lighting solution aligned with the unit’s mission of providing parent and infant-centred care in a comfortable and non-clinical environment.
A well-designed lighting system can significantly impact patient recovery. Our MBU project included custom light fittings and continuous linear profiles, perfectly integrated with the unit’s overall design and ambience. The Illure light fittings installed above the hospital beds and throughout the hallways were carefully engineered to enhance visual wellbeing and assist mental and physical recovery. Thereby creating a soothing environment where mums could stay close to their bubs and experience positive mother-baby interactions.
Patient safety is paramount in any healthcare setting. Therefore, anti-ligature lighting products were used throughout the MBU to prevent intentional or accidental self-harm.
These fittings are designed and installed to avoid any loose parts, sharp points or surfaces, thus minimising the risk of ligature attachment points, safeguarding the wellbeing of mums and reducing potential hazards in the unit.
